Winter Arc Tracker

October 1 is Day 1, December 31 is Day 92, and January 1 is graduation. Three to five rules of your own, held daily, no restart on a miss, ninety-two days on one grid. The dates are not yours to pick, which is the whole point: a season arrives on its own, for everyone at once, at the worst possible time of year.

The arc is already running

Today is day 3 of the winter. Write your rules and your arc runs from today to December 31 — the finish line does not move for latecomers.

Common picks
Binary, not aspirational: at 23:00 you have to be able to answer it yes or no without arguing.

The winter — all 92 days

Ninety-two days. No days held yet.

One link a day.

One page: your rules, then all 92 days dated for ticking by hand. The same dialog will save it as a PDF.

The backlink

Embed your progress

Paste this anywhere that takes HTML — a blog post, a forum signature, a wiki page — and it shows the day you are on. The count is worked out on our end every time the card loads, so you paste it once and never touch it again.

The day number looks after itself. The held percentage is a snapshot taken the moment you copied — it is stored on this device, so re-copy the code whenever you want the number refreshed. The link line under the card is not decoration: it is how anyone reading finds the tracker.

The method

How the season is worked out

The dates are not yours to pick, and that is the method. October 1 is Day 1, December 31 is the last day, and October 31 plus November 30 plus December 31 is 92 days. January 1 is graduation rather than Day 93. Every year, the same window, for everybody at once.

The day you are on is the days between October 1 and today, plus one, clamped to the range 1 to 92. Joining late does not move the finish: commit on November 1 and your Day 1 is November 1, the last day is still December 31, and your run is 61 days rather than 92. The page counts your own total from your start rather than pretending you were there in October, and the days before you joined are drawn cold — not as days you failed, because the arc had not asked you for them.

Commit before October and Day 1 is October 1 regardless, because the season has a start and an intention does not.

Your rules are three to five of your own, held daily. Three is the floor because two rules is a preference; five is the ceiling because a sixth is where people start writing rules for the version of themselves they intend to become. A day closes when every rule is held. A missed day is marked and stays marked for the rest of the season — there is no restart, and the completion percentage at the end is a count of what happened rather than a pass or a fail.

Out of season the page counts down to October 1 and refuses to start early. If it is March, the same challenge without a calendar attached is on this site under its own name.

Unbroken counts days. It does not measure anything about your body, and nothing above is medical, nutritional or fitness advice. Where a number here is our own judgement rather than a published figure, the note says so and cites nothing. Method last checked 21 August 2026.

Why a dated season beats a resolution

A resolution begins whenever you decide it begins, which means it can also begin next Monday, which is how most of them quietly never begin at all. October 1 is not open to negotiation. It arrives on its own, it arrives for everyone at once, and it lands at the worst possible time — dark by five, cold, a diary full of reasons to stay in. That is the entire point. Whatever you can hold from October to January you can hold in any weather, and on January 1 you are already the person the resolution was going to describe.

The freedom is also the flaw. The arc has no fixed task list, so nothing stops you writing soft rules in September, or rewriting a hard one in week six when it starts to bite. That is why this page makes you put three to five in writing and lock them before Day 1, and why the grid keeps every missed day visible for the full ninety-two. Rules you can edit mid-run are not rules — they are a mood.

Whatever you settle on, print it. The challenge rules poster puts the four fixed rules and your own three to five on one page with a line to sign, which is a harder thing to renegotiate in November than a note on a phone.

If it is March and you are reading this, do not wait until October. The same challenge without the season attached is the great lock in — your rules, your length, starting the day you decide. If what you are after is the quiet rather than the calendar, that version is monk mode: 30, 60 or 90 days that name what comes out as well as what goes in. The arc is the version where the calendar decides for you, and for a lot of people that is the only reason it starts at all.

The questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the winter arc challenge?
A self-improvement sprint that runs October 1 to January 1: you pick 3–5 non-negotiable daily rules and hold them through the darkest, busiest stretch of the year. The idea is to arrive at January 1 already transformed while everyone else is writing resolutions.

When does the winter arc start and end?
Day 1 is October 1 and the final day is December 31 — 92 days. January 1 is graduation. If you join late, your arc runs from your join date to December 31; the finish line does not move.

What rules should I pick?
Three to five, specific and binary — done or not done. Common picks: train every day, read 10 pages, a fixed wake time, no alcohol, a nightly journal entry, phone down by 21:00. If a rule needs judgement to score, sharpen it until it does not.

What happens if I miss a day?
Nothing dramatic and nothing forgiving: the day is marked missed, it stays red on the grid, and the arc continues. No restart — the winter arc is measured by the grid you finish with.

Can I start before October?
You can build and commit your rules any time — the tracker holds them and counts down to Day 1. The arc itself starts when October does. That is the point of an arc: everyone in it is in it together.

Is there a printable winter arc tracker?
Yes. Press "Print the paper grid" and you get a one-page sheet: your rules at the top, all 92 days dated below, sized for a fridge door. Your browser's print dialog will also save it as a PDF. Rules you have not written yet print as blank lines to fill in by hand.
